My love of photography started very young in life and eventuated to working professionally in the late 1970’s and 80’s. I received mixed commissions in fashion spreads, events, theatre, music promotion and magazine work. In the early days of magazine work I was sent out to capture candid images of people attending music venues and clubs. Stalking and anticipating patrons having a good time often resulted with spontaneous and controversial images for the weekly social pages. Attempting to be “invisible” with my camera and flash wasn’t easy however I learned some valuable skills for Street Photography.I wouldn’t have said that I was a great commercial photographer at the age of twenty five however my spontaneous approach and zest for creating something different was very helpful.
Being self taught I often flew by the seat of my pants loving every minute of it, especially working in black and white.
I ended up working for a large commercial outfit managing their black and white lab, pumping out prints. It was all advertising work from washing machines to cars.Eventually I lost the creative context of my own artistic photography expression and my personal existential crisis saw me walking away from photography altogether.
After a couple of careers I established myself in the Counselling area and worked with complex addiction and homelessness issues. Photography became my self care process which then proceeded to take over every bit of my spare time.
I have a great interest in Humans and not only in community work. Photography and Humans go hand in hand. The Street is where I can observe Humans in their environment and capture meaningful stories which help me make sense of reality.
The images in my gallery are a kind of retrospective from between 2012 -2016. More recently I have been developing my methods and workflow for capturing candid Street images and other Urban abstractions.
