Lest We Forget.
Project statement:-
"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them."
On the morning of 25th April 1915, the Anzacs set out to capture Gallipoli, in order to open up the Dardenelles for the allied navies. The objective was to take Constantinople (now Istanbul in Turkey), an ally of Germany.
When they landed, they were met with fierce fighting from the Turkish defenders. What was meant to eliminate Turkey from the war, ended up being a campaign that dragged on for eight months. Over 8000 Australians were killed.
News of the landing at Gallipoli and the horrific events that followed had a profound effect on Australians at home and the 25th of April became a day of remembrance. This tradition continues today with a dawn service and parades in city centres, as we remember the 103,021 men and women who have died while serving in the Australian military.
For me personally, Anzac Day is a time that makes me stop and think about the freedom that I all too often take for granted.
Lest We Forget.
Bio:-
My name's Sam and I'm an amateur photographer based in Melbourne, Australia with a focus on street and documentary photography.
Photography has been in my life since day one. I was born in Hong Kong where my Father worked as a Freelance Photographer. Moving to the UK soon after, my childhood was spent around Photography where Dad worked as a lecturer at an Arts University. I would regularly attend exhibitions and became inspired by the images surrounding me.
By age thirteen I started to show a serious interest in Photography and was gifted a Canon AE1 Program 35mm SLR from a neighbour in our street (shout out Steve!) This generous gift opened my world to Photography and this is where my journey began. I still use that camera to this day.
My photography has always been there throughout the years, albeit more active at times than others. However, a workplace injury to my hand in January 2023, saw me at home and with a lot more time on my hands. I was going for walks for exercise and the free time I now had, enabled me to slow down again and absorb the world around me.
I purchased a new camera to take with me on my walks and my passion for photography was ignited again! I'm keen to continue honing my skills, finding my voice in photography and hopefully be recognised for some of my work.
