Photowalk

AASPi invites members to join us for a meet up and photo walk on Saturday November 25th.

We’re meeting at the traffic lights outside the Ian Potter Centre, Flinders Street Melbourne CBD at 5pm.  (the lights that cross over to Hosier Lane).

The plan is to meet there and go for a walk for about and hour and a half, then catch up for a pre Christmas bite to eat or drink.  From there you have the option to stay on and shoot the evening streets afterwards.

Members of the committee will be in attendance and willing to share some tips on how they go about shooting on the streets, and also to help those with some camera setting issues if required. This is also a chance to observe how they go about their craft.

For those who would like to get in to the city earlier, you can join a few members at the Ian Potter Centre to check out the current photography exhibition “Photography: Real and Imagined”.

This exhibition examines two perspectives on photography; photography grounded in the real world, as a record, a document, a reflection of the world around us; and photography as the product of imagination, storytelling and illusion. On occasion, photography operates in both realms of the real and the imagined.

Those wishing to view the exhibition with some fellow members,  meet in the entrance to the Ian Potter Centre at 3.45 for a 4.00 viewing. You can find out more detail about the exhibition here:

Photography: Real and Imagined | NGV

AASPI Speaker Series

Julia Coddington - Selecting your images for exhibitions

  • Speaker Series: Julia Coddington

  • Tuesday, 9th May 2023

  • 8pm, on Google Meet

Julia is an internationally awarded photographer and judge of street photography around the world, and she is joining us to talk about how to select your own work for exhibition. We all know it's hard to decide which of your images deserve that coveted space on the gallery wall, and even harder to work out if and how you might sequence more than one image.

If this is your current dilemma, we invite you to submit the images you’re considering for exhibition.

Julia is here to talk us through the selection process. She will talk briefly about what makes a great image, and what you should look for in your own work, and then she will review a representative sample of the audience’s submissions.

If you would like the chance to have your images discussed, please submit them via this form. You can submit up to 5 images. They can form a series or be just individual images. Form submissions are open now and close at midnight on Sunday.

https://online.forms.app/secretaryaaspi/speakerseriesimagereviewform

Julia will choose from the submissions according to the time available and we will let you know before the workshop whether your images will be discussed.

Please bear in mind that if selected we’ll expect that you will be in attendance at the workshop to discuss your work and your selection considerations. The workshop will be recorded and made available as usual on our YouTube channel afterwards.

The Meeting link will be sent out the day before the event, so keep an eye on your email.

Looking forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday, and get your images in!

AASPI Speaker Series

Kerry Faulkner

Join us at 8pm Tuesday 8th November for AAPSI’s Speaker Series, with photographer Kerry Faulkner.

Kerry Faulkner is a multi-award winning freelance journalist moving increasingly to photojournalism. Her street photography images have been in exhibitions in Perth, Sydney, Melbourne and New York and featured in a number of international publications including Street Photography Magazine and International Street Photography and Reportage. Her work is also part of the WA State Library collection. She describes her style of street photography as ‘fast and loose’ and says she has a genuine interest in, and curiosity about, the people she photographs. Creatively, Kerry thrives on the risk and daring of the ‘jetty jumpers’, the passion and energy of the beachside salsa dancers and the comradery and resilience of square dancers in the old hall in White Gum Valley. These are just a few of her favourite haunts however one of her great skills is finding fertile new places and groups of people for imagery that show life as it is –no filter, like ‘Floki’ the street barber, cutting the hair of the homeless in Perth’s CBD which The Guardian featured as picture essay October 2021. She is a member of the Australian Association of Street Photographer Inc (AASPI).

“Kerry is quickly becoming the master of mono observational documentary art, speaking with an Australian lens narrating universal themes,” Brett Canet-Gibson, Creative Director Twine.

AASPI Speaker Series

Christian Clowes - Out of Exile

Join us at 8pm Tuesday 13th September for AAPSI’s Speaker Series. Photographer Christian Clowes will present “Out of Exile”.

Christian is a street photographer based in Perth, Western Australia. With a deep love for the human condition and large congregations of people, Christian seeks out a wide variety of social events across Perth to document these experiences.

‘Out of Exile’ refers to Christians 2-year absence from social media. Reaching a junction in his photographic journey, he made the decision to focus on chasing his vision instead of likes and followers. Christian will talk about the traps of social media and how removing himself has allowed him to rediscover his love for his hometown and that of street photography itself.

Christian will also discuss his experiences and present new photographs not just from the city streets, but also his time documenting the local ‘bush doof’ scene, protests from notable social movements and the recent covid pandemic, as well as various carnivals and cultural events.

Ushi Grant - Street Photography for personal inspiration and social change

'Street Photography for personal inspiration and social change' by Ushi Grant @sombra_y_luz

Tuesday, 12 July, 8pm

"Ushi uses photography to explore and find moments in our urban life that celebrate the magic of people in their everyday activities. Ushi finds inspiration all around her - in quirky moments, subtle human interactions or simply the fleeting dance of light and shadow.

Ushi also explores the seemingly mundane urban and industrial landscapes that are often bypassed by the casual observer. Through the use of light and shadow and colour she examines and captures the essential geometry of our urban spaces.

Ushi's work has appeared in Lonely Planet, Australian Traveller and Mobiography magazines. Recently her work has been included in the books, "Women Street Photographers" and the inaugural "International Portrait Photographer of the Year "

Ushi is an ambassador for the 24 Hour Project: Photographers for Social Change. www.24hourproject.org @24hourproject

AASPI Speaker Series

Lou Gilbert - Twists and Turns

Join us at 8pm Tuesday 14th June for AAPSI’s Speaker Series. Photographer Lou Gilbert will present “Twists and Turns”.

Lou first discovered street photography at her local camera group about 4 years ago in Brisbane. She didn’t know what ‘street‘ was but it seemed the best special interest group to join since there wasn’t a subgroup on ‘travel’ photography which was the only experience she had at that point.
It took a while for her to get the hang of ‘street’, but she has grown to love the chase: looking for light, colour, contrast and quirky in the ordinary and everyday.
While finding the time she spends on the street a meditative process, Lou says it’s fortunate she enjoys getting lost because her sense of direction is seriously deficient.
The thrill of getting a keeper after 999 duds keeps Lou out and about, exploring new places and optimistic that another good image might be around the next corner.
She has an image in the 2021 Women Street Photographers photo book and has had images exhibited in New York, Paris, Brussels, New Delhi and here in Australia.

Brent Durrant is Kiwi-born Melbourne based street photographer. Brent spent many years in a senior management position with a multi-national cosmetics company. During these years he not only travelled the world but was responsible for directing photo-shoots and creating future trends which was key to the success, direction, and image of the company.

Leaving the corporate world behind him Brent and his wife Debra have travelled extensively over the years documenting their travels mainly with video. It was only about 5 years ago Brent decided to include still photography alongside the video format and his journey into the world of street photography began.

Brents preference is to shoot in black and white of people going about their everyday lives whilst trying to capture a deep emotional link such as happiness, pain, sadness, loneliness, or humour. He also tries to depict dark and mysterious mood to illustrate the subject's character.

Brents has had work featured in exhibitions in Vienna and Chicago and has also had work included as part of a ‘Dominant Black’ theme in Digital Camera World International

In 2021 he received two Highly Commended awards in the Mono Awards.

He was also involved in our very own AASPI book “Melbourne Unmasked” and the “SITHOM” exhibition 2021.

Andrew Rovenko

Documenting backyard space travel, one walk at the time.

Join us at 8pm Tuesday 8th March for AAPSI’s Speaker Series. Photographer Andrew Rovenko will present his “Documenting backyard space travel, one walk at the time”.

Ukraine born and raised, now calling Australia home for over 17 years, being currently based in Melbourne.
Photography has always been a passion but never became a career.

A stint as a freelance magazine photographer and a variety of commercial assignments over the years provided invaluable skills and experience, but could never match the fun and freedom of not having to work towards a specific goal.
This eventually led to doing just personal work, primarily on film, where the joy of craftsmanship can be experienced the most.
One of such personal projects - The Rocketgirl Chronicles that was born during Melbourne’s 6th lockdown found critical acclaim and resonance around the world, with international coverage including Vogue and The Rolling Stone Magazine, and the author being awarded 2021 Australian Photographer of the Year by the Australian Photography Magazine.

Brent has been a finalist in the Moran Photographic Prize, the Perc Tucker Photographic Portrait Prize, the Australian Photography Awards (documentary) and the Bluethumb Art Prize. His work has been exhibited in galleries and published in books and magazines.

“I've found that using film has resulted in taking far less images, but enjoying the process and the results more. It also resulted in trying out different formats and changing the way of approaching a scene.

“The topics I've become more interested in also changed too. The talk will span my earlier street photography and then more recently how it's changed moving to film.”

Speaker Series 2 Tony Reddrop.jpeg

The AASPI Speaker Series is back in 2021.

Please join us on Feb 9 to hear Tony Reddrop regale us, from all the way across the ditch, with 'The story so far...'.

Tony started his journey in the late nineties, and then took a break for eight years. Almost six years forward, and the journey has recommenced. He photographs things the way he sees them, focusing on light, shadow, and colour. His images focus on the people and things, in the small semi rural town where he lives in New Zealand. He uses multiple mediums to show his work; exhibition, electronic media, and public display as billboard style images two metres plus in size. He believes it's important to have images accessible, to as many people as possible, because not everyone feels comfortable in a gallery. The journey has taken him from assisting commercial photographers and as a freelance press photographer. It is all a learning curve...but as long as you are learning.

We're doing a new thing!

In response to the stage 4 lockdown in Melbourne, we've decided to start a speaker series where our community can gather (virtually of course), hear some inspiring photographers talk about their work, and see some brilliant images.

Tuesday evening at 8pm, kicking off on August 18 at 8pm Adrian Whear (@adtamo) has kindly agreed to get us on our way. Come and listen to him regale us with the story of his epicly awesome Bangladesh catalogue.
